Please state your full name and your position here at Marlborough College Malaysia.

Jo Williams, Head of EYFS and teaching in Reception.

How long have you been at MCM?

I joined this academic year in August.

Could you share a little about your background, family, hobbies, and anything else that’s important to you?

Originally from the UK, I grew up in a small town in the Brecon Beacons in South Wales. I am a proud mum of four, with my eldest daughter, Ella, currently at university, while my three boys, Alfie, Olly and George, join me here in MCM.

I have worked in education for over 25 years, teaching children across all age groups from Nursery through to Year 8. In 2020, I moved to Malaysia and began working at a school in Kuala Lumpur, where I was Deputy Head of Primary and Head of EYFS.

I have always been passionate about sport and believe it plays such an important role in children’s lives. Having played football and netball when I was younger, I especially enjoy supporting my own children as they take part in their many matches and competitions.

Outside of school, I love staying active through running and swimming. However, most of all, I enjoy spending time with my family and friends, making memories and embracing new adventures whenever possible.

Why Marlborough College Malaysia and why Malaysia?

I have now lived in Malaysia for six years and have fallen in love with every part of this beautiful country. It has truly become home for my family, and we feel very fortunate to have experienced so much of what Malaysia has to offer.

We chose Marlborough College because of its fantastic reputation, its beautiful location and the opportunity to explore and experience another part of this wonderful country. It felt like an exciting new chapter for our family and a chance to continue making memories together.

Can you describe your experiences and achievements in your current/previous role?

I strongly believe that children learn best when they feel safe, secure, valued, and supported. One of my proudest achievements in my previous role was creating The Rainbow Room – a dedicated sensory-based space designed to support students’ wellbeing, promote positive mental health, and foster meaningful relationships.

The Rainbow Room became a welcoming environment that students could access throughout the school day. Supported by a dedicated Listening Teacher, it provided a safe and trusted space where children could talk openly, feel heard, and receive guidance through any challenges they were facing.

As a multi-sensory environment, the Rainbow Room quickly became the heart of our pastoral provision within the primary school. More importantly, it offered every child a calm and nurturing haven where they could regulate their emotions, build resilience, and develop the confidence to engage positively with both their learning and their relationships.

Do you have any new or exciting initiatives or events that you’re looking forward to this academic year?

I am deeply passionate about education, particularly early childhood education, and I am excited about exploring new ways to continually improve our provision. My aim is to ensure that we create an inspiring, nurturing, and high-quality learning environment where every child has the opportunity to thrive and reach their full potential.

Is there a message you’d like to leave for the pupils, staff, or parents?

Believe in yourself, trust your dreams, and never let doubt define what you can achieve. When you stumble, close your eyes, take a deep breath, believe in yourself, and find the courage to try again.
