30th April 2026

Dear Parents,

I will use this newsletter throughout the year to keep you informed of activities, trips and other events that are happening around the College.  It is worthwhile bookmarking the news page of the website, as this is where you will see more detail and some photos of these items, such as Lectern Club on Tuesday, 14th April (congratulations to Edward and Ethan on their winning speeches) and the House Rugby and Cricket.

This week, the Irving Theatre was transformed into a ‘stifling’ 1930s Andalusian village as our Lower Sixth IB Literature and Performance students delivered a dramatic extract from Gabriel García Lorca’s explosive masterpiece, The House of Bernarda Alba.

The performance explored the claustrophobic world of Bernarda, a cold and controlling matriarch, and the fractured relationships she maintains with her daughters. Through deliberate choices in props, set design, and costume, the students conveyed Lorca’s rich symbolism, turning the stage into a vivid realisation of his haunting text.

Deep Thinking Fortnight: 4th – 15th May

As part of our ongoing commitment to best practice in education, we are implementing a two-week ‘Deep Thinking’ period for Shell and Remove pupils from Monday 4th – Friday 15th May. During this fortnight, pupils will work without their MacBooks during all lessons.

This initiative forms part of our current review of educational research regarding screen time and device use. Our objective is to ensure that when digital tools are deployed in the classroom, their application is always highly intentional and pedagogically sound. Scheduling this period in the run-up to the end-of-year exams serves a practical academic purpose, too, providing pupils with a valuable opportunity to cultivate the handwriting stamina and sustained concentration required for their upcoming end-of-year exams.

From Monday, 4th May pupils will not need to bring their MacBook with them to school. However, to maintain clarity and consistent communication, teachers will continue to set prep tasks via Google Classroom for pupils to access remotely. This also ensures pupils will be able to continue accessing any digital revision resources ahead of their end-of-year exams.

We appreciate your partnership in supporting this measured approach to digital learning, while we continue to reflect on evidence-based teaching practices that offer the best learning experience for your children.

As Hundred study leave begins on Monday, I would like to remind both them and parents that Hundred are welcome to come into school to see their Beaks or study in the Library. If they are coming in then they must register at LRC12 as soon as they arrive.  Boarding pupils will design their revision programme with the assistance of their HMs.  If they wish to see a Beak to get help with their revision then they should email in advance to check when the Beak is available. Day pupils will be required to show the ID card we have provided to them upon exiting the school site prior to the end of the school day. If you have any concerns about your child leaving before 4.15pm during study leave, please email my PA at CClark@marlboroughcollege.my to make us aware.

Thank you to those who attended the rescheduled Remove Parent Beak evening on Wednesday.  I know that Beaks appreciate the opportunity to give you verbal feedback on your child’s progress.

Yours sincerely,
